‘The Tree of Life is a symbol that appears in nearly every ancient culture. With its branches reaching into the sky, and its roots deep in the earth, it dwells in three worlds – heaven, earth and underworld – and acts as a link among the three.’ – Canadian Tapestry, Textile Museum of Canada, 2012.
Arbor Vitae is a the mural scale Tree of Life design that anchors the Garden of Good and Evil collection and is complimented by seven coordinating patterns in four colourways from traditional to trend setting.
Night time walks reveal a new side to the beauty of the natural world with light shining through the branches and shadows cast providing inspiration for this collection which celebrates the forms revealed.
The process for this collection used photos taken during these evening strolls and multi-coloured shadows were photographed in studio with flowers, leaves and branches. Patterns have been built up with many layers of light and shadow revealing unique qualities of form and depth.
Innovative pattern layout and colour stories create a vibrant harmony and signature style.
The Shadow Play collection pioneers the use of digitally printed wool fabric for upholstery.

Inspired by the art of Rita Winkler, a 37-year-old, Toronto-based watercolour artist who was born with Down syndrome and who brings joy into the world through both her art and her actions.
“Rita’s paintings are playful and intuitive, not analytical. You can feel the fun she has making them. There is freedom from realism in her choice and placement of colour, and in her addition of decorations like dots and stripes. I knew it would be a great experience to use her work as inspiration and source material for a new textile line that blends our artistic perspectives.” – Barry Roode
The Rita’s World collection consists of six patterns and one large scale mural available in six colourways.
Born in Calgary, Alberta, Canadian watercolour artist Rita Winkler currently lives in Toronto with her mother, Helen. Despite being diagnosed with Down syndrome, Rita has a redefined artistic boundaries throughout her life through her actions, her observations, and her art. Her book “My Art, My World,” offers readers a light-hearted but illuminating look into Rita’s world – a place full of joy and colour.
